CHILDREN’S FEAR OF DEATH EASED BY

MINNESOTA AUTHOR’S GROUNDBREAKING BOOK

Children are naturally curious about death.  They are oftentimes afraid.  When a Grandparent is dying, parents are often uncomfortable talking to their young children about death.  Carol McCormick’s children’s book, A Bridge for Grandma can be a great help.  This book is based upon interviews with hundreds of children.

(ISBN 1-59298-162-3 published October 2006 by Beaver's Pond Press)

In A Bridge for Grandma a young girl has a near-death experience in a hospital emergency room.  After leaving her body, she is met by her deceased Grandpa, and flies with him to heaven, but is told there that she cannot stay.  Her Grandma loves to hear this story.  Together they make a scrapbook, starting with photos of the girl with her Grandpa.  They sing as they work together on the scrapbook, bake cookies, rake leaves, and garden.  When Grandma gets sick, the girl finishes the scrapbook beside her bed.  Grandma tells her she is dying, but she is not afraid because of the girl’s story.  There is a sad goodbye and funeral.  When the girl misses her Grandma, she looks at their scrapbook. The girl sees that Grandma now lives in her heart.

A Bridge for Grandma is a wonder.  The drawings are exquisite, the story authentic.  I sincerely hope that every school, every doctor’s office, every library, every hospice and hospital in this land stocks this book.  Its value is so great, it is incalculable!”        P.M.H.
